Single family renovation

Carriage House

location

Austin, Texas

Project scope

Exterior & Interior Remodel

Project size

1,254 sq ft
The front of the Carriage House is adorned with navy siding and warm wood garage doors. A yellow vintage VW beetle sits in the driveway.

Built circa 1936, this former garage apartment didn’t meet any City standards. The lot measures only 2,300 square feet, and at some point the structure had been converted into an unauthorized duplex. Creating a single family residence within the existing footprint was a challenge, especially with the City’s permitting requirement: the structure had to re-incorporate a garage. We drew inspiration from some handsome carriage houses of the past and fit the design for modern times.

The Carriage House kitchen feels clean and modern with navy blue cabinets, wood upper shelves, and white subway tiled walls.
An alternate view of the Carriage House kitchen shows the generosity of the space. A leather barstool is pulled up to a central island.

The new kitchen is tucked in the downstairs front corner of the two-story residence and provides a great view to the street through an existing window. This is a cook’s kitchen with space for all the essential tools.

A man ascends a modern stairway in the Carriage House. The hall is decorated with a black bench and vintage wall clock.

Fresh and bright, this new bathroom is located on the 2nd floor alongside two bedrooms and a second bath. Affordable and durable materials were key throughout this remodel. All interior finishes were selected by the Pluck team.
